Candace Thaxton returns once again to narrate the audiobook version, her performance bringing great emotion to the story - the shift in Heaven’s accent was a clever acting choice, which shows her adapting to the middle-class environment and moving away from her country roots. Leigh’s past is also slowly revealed as Heaven learns how deeply the abusive cycle goes in her family on both sides. No longer a naive fearful child, Heaven is driven by ambitious and revenge, so much so that the reader sees a darker side to her. Heaven’s upbringing makes her tougher, but family secrets and the ghosts of her past continue to haunt her.
